I am a Ph.D. and (as yet, un-tenured) professor in a politics-related field. Because of my career, my ability to speak out often or freely about my political opinions and activities, under my own name, is limited. However, there has never been a time when I have felt the need to speak out more.
The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States took me by surprise as much as it did almost everyone else who pays close attention to such matters. Once the initial shock wore off, I began to recognize that my deepest desire is to act. I, like so many Americans, have a lot of fear about what the next four years might bring. I want to do everything I can to make sure that despite this outcome, we don’t let our country slip backwards (further than it already has). I am planning to do that in lot of ways, but I realized that one of the ways I should be doing it is by writing – because that is what I do best. This blog is first and foremost an outlet for me to do so (if only for my mental well-being). If, in the process, anyone finds the content I generate to be useful and helpful in their own fight for our country, all the better.
Potentially relevant information, shaping my position and particular interests regarding Trump’s presidency: I am a white man in my late 20s. I am gay. I am an avowed feminist. I was raised Christian, but now identify with a different faith. Despite my conservative an extremely white upbringing, my main priority in life is to overcome racial prejudice in every form. Professionally, my main interests are about economic policy, but personally, most of my political passion derives from social issues. In case all of that wasn’t enough for you to make these assumptions: I am a progressive, I am a Democrat, and I voted for Hillary Clinton.
I am a dedicated liberal, but I do hope to bring a sense of political balance to this blog. I have my own firm political positions, but I intend to respect and consider the best evidence that we have about the positions of Trump and his supporters. This does not mean that I support such supporters in any way – only that I seek best how to understand them, incorporate their concerns, and thus defeat autocratic tendencies in the next election cycle. Continuing to move forward is paramount to me, and I will do it in any way that I can. Total rejection of opposition claims doesn’t strike me as particularly useful.
